Bhavana was haunted by thoughts of a malevolent Hindu goddess, even though she was a pious Hindu who performed all of the rituals a Hindu should perform. So disturbing
were her thoughts that she could sleep only for short periods and only during the
day. When the sun set and night began, she became so restless and fearful that she
could not sleep at all. Belonging to a rich high-caste family of money lenders,
she could take her problem to various doctors, but none of their treatments offered
more than temporary relief.
When Pastor Christopher met her six months ago, distributing gospel tracts in her
village, Bhavana had suffered from this evil for six years. He offered her a gospel
tract, but she was offended and refused to accept it. "You people don't have any
work to do," she said, scolding the pastor. "You are coming to convert our people
to Christianity." Pastor Christopher, weathering her scorn, simply stood there
and prayed for her.
Her village is one of five villages in which Pastor Christopher, having joined Serve
India Ministries, was prayerfully working to found a new church. Last month, while
distributing more gospel tracts in her village, he again saw Bhavana, who became
angry and shouted at him. He left without a word, but that night he fasted and
prayed for her. And that night she slept well, for the first time in years. In
a dream, a figure wearing a white garment asked her to go and to meet the pastor,
which she did the next morning. "Pastor, I was spending my nights without sleep,
but yesterday I could sleep well. It is because of your God Jesus, who is a true
God." Pastor Christopher shared the gospel with her and led her to know Jesus.
Bhavana's entire family was touched by her healing. Now all seven of them attend
Pastor Christopher's church.
