You've probably heard of sacred cows. How about sacred trees? There are areas in India where the villagers still hold an ancient belief that a certain species of tree is sacred. They believe that death will come immediately to anyone who dares to cut one down. So, wherever these trees happen to grow, they are tolerated, even if they take root and flourish in the middle of a road.
Serve India Ministries Pastor Nilla was in such an area, going house-to-house, sharing the Gospel. At one house, he met the owner of a cultivated field. As Pastor Nilla spoke to the owner, he noticed a tree in the middle this man's field. It obviously obstructed the agricultural use of the land. Pastor Nilla asked the owner why he hadn't cut down the tree? The man explained that it was a sacred tree. Cutting it down was impossible. Pastor Nilla challenged the man with the truth of the Gospel. The man, in response, challenged Pastor Nilla, "Let's see you cut down
the tree."
Pastor Nilla accepted the challenge and cut down the tree. All the residents of the village expected the pastor to die at that very moment or at least on that very day, but nothing happened to him. He was still alive. Seeing this, many of the villagers put their trust in the Lord. Their village is now open to the Gospel.
